Weekly Vocabulary

1. Bang Bang Club - Four photographers and others that were involved with capturing the activism in South Africa, primarily Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva.

2. VII Photo Agency - A photographic agency with 9 members that focus on capturing conflict. Was created by seven members.

3. PhotoRealism - A genre of art/photography where photographers try to replicate a photograph to another medium as realistically as possible through many different methods.

Artist of the Week: James Nachtwey

This picture by James Nachtwey is extremely powerful, the hand position and side shot of the facial features of this young man,  along with the contrast of the background creates a hugely powerful effect demonstrating the effects of war, the scars on his face, the position of his hand, his eyes, and the expression of his mouth really show the injury that he's been through. To add to the effect of these elements, Nachtwey also captures this photograph in black and white, creating a somberness.

This photograph is so sad, the posture of this man laying on the ground, the hands touching the ground, the man's body so thing and skinny, almost starved to death, James Nachtwey upheld justice by capturing the horrors that occur elsewhere and sharing them. The man seems so hopeless, his expression towards the ground, bones more then fat showing, the darkness of the structure behind him adds to this, the knowledge that humans lie nearby but nobody is doing anything.

Artist Of The Week: Julius Shulman

This image is captured beautifully, the hills seeming to be of varying opacities in the background, the very geometrically symmetric and appealing structure of the house, the angle that captures everything from the mountains to the pool, to a lady posing for the picture. I really like this picture of it's overall flow and design, especially the fogginess above the house and how each hill seems to get foggier into the distance. The house seems to be very modern even though the picture was taken in black and white, the center hallway below the chimney seems to be the main room.

The beautiful night is captured by artist/photographer Julius Shulman, in this photograph, the modern architecture of LA is flaunted against the grid like landscaping of the inner city. In this famous photograph of a famous modernist house, the architecture of a house sitting on a cliff, with overly large roofs captures all attention. The focal point seems to be the bright light inside the building, the contrast between black and white between the roof is very visually appealing, as well as the angle on which the photograph is taken.

I plan on choosing apathy/indifference as my social issue.

Artist of The Week: Lee Miller

This picture of the Vogue model Lee Miller is really artistic and fashionable.
Her white shirt seems to be the focal point and draws a lot of attention to the eyes.
Her slender face, and perfectly proportional eyes, slightly large nose and lips, add
a lot of beauty to the image. Furthermore, her clothes in the vintage color scheme
of old cameras creates a warm fuzzy sense and the white gloves she wears gives her
an upscale impression. The back ground with a distinct black line nicely complements her
pose.

This photography of Lee Miller is solarized, you can tell because of the black shadows
standing out on the edge's surrounding her body's boundary with the backdrop. This image's
black and white color creates a more somber tone, and the facial expression of seriousness and
absence of emotion backs that up. The slender upper body captured in this photograph makes her
seem tall whether or not that's true in reality. Capturing a side shot gives a less pressuring feel on her
eyes because she is not looking directly at the viewer of the photograph.

Solarisation - A photographic phenomenon that reverses the tones of a photograph, rendering dark areas light and vice versa.

Photogram (Man Ray's rayograph) - A photograph made without a camera by placing objects directly onto a photographic surface, Man Ray's is one of the most famous and involved using many objects that he took photos of to create an image referencing the abstract art of famous cubists and other types of artists.
